At the center of the Meru Wireless LAN System is the Meru Controller. The Meru Controller Family provides coordination of Meru Access Points to deliver industry leading scalability, reliability and security for large scale wireless LANs. The Controller is the central engine that enforces all wireless LAN policies including security, plug-and-play deployment, RF resource management, mobility, contention management, and Quality of Service. Air Traffic Control Technology The key to Meru’s innovation and enabling solution is its patented Air Traffic Control technology. Air Traffic Control technology manages signal contention with sophisticated time-based traffic controls. The technology delivers predictable bandwidth, free of latency and jitter problems, to increase user density and application performance. Unlike other WLAN systems in which access points work independently and must be laboriously configured to deliver adjacent, non-overlapping coverage, the Meru WLAN System utilizes a “cellular” approach to WLANs to deliver key advantages, including:

   
 
Contention Management and Inter-cell Coordination: The Meru WLAN system takes the hard work out of the WLAN equation by solving the fundamental issue with Wi-Fi networks—channel contention within and across cells. Rather than obscuring the problem with RF management tools and “brute force fixes” (e.g., manipulating access point (AP) power levels to reduce interference), Meru’s approach altogether eliminates the need for costly site surveys, recurring AP configurations, and on-going channel allocations—resulting in unprecedented network density and predictable performance at a far lower cost.
   
 

“Over-the-Air” QoS: Meru delivers the only WLAN system that supports fine-grained Quality of Service (QoS) per application, user, and flow, both upstream and downstream between the client and the access points. This enables the same wireless LAN to be used for both data and voice while ensuring optimum performance for every client.

   
 

Zero-loss Handoff: With Meru’s Virtual Cell feature, multiple Meru APs act as one powerful, wide-ranging AP, providing zero-handoff between physical APs as users roam in and out of the range of various physical access points.

   
 

Full Performance B/G: Meru’s Dual Speed WLAN technology delivers maximum performance for any client on a hybrid wireless LAN (WLAN), by automatically sensing the performance of the client accessing the network (b or g) and dynamically adjusting the amount of resources available to that client, according to its required level of performance. As a result, users of 802.11g clients no longer have to accept reduced performance when working on the same LAN as 802.11b clients, and Meru can deliver predictable 802.11g performance to over 100 simultaneous active users.
